What is an electric bike? An electric bike is a powered bicycle which is classed as a normal bicycle as long as it stays within certain rules. Please view our Warranty and Legal page
What do I need to ride an electric bike? As they are classed the same as normal cycles you do not need tax, insurance, mot or a helmet but the helmet and insurance would be recommended though not compulsory.
How long do they take to charge? After conditioning a lithium ion battery will normally take between 3 to 6 hours to fully charge.
What is the range? We have some bikes that can cover around 50 miles with assisted pedalling but the range also depends upon several factors including: Terrain, Wind, Weight of rider, Weight of total bike with spares, Temperature and the Mode bike is used in.
Do they charge while you ride them? Yes the bikes do generate current when freewheeling, but in general the amount of power produced is little more than a trickle charge and you would have to coast or freewheel for many miles to have a noticeable effect.
What are the price ranges of electric bikes? Electric bikes can start from as little as £400 but at Pedals Plus Power we believe that you only get what you pay for so our range starts from £999. Please visit our sales page for more details.
What types of power systems and definitions? There are e-bikes which is an electric bike with a throttle where no pedalling is required or is optional and there are pedelecs which do not have a throttle but have pedal assistance instead. Some makes like Wisper have both systems on most of their models.
What styles do they come in? Electric bikes can range from mountain bike styles to city commuters, dutch or ladies style, folding electric bikes and even electric tricycles!
Can you get insurance for an electric bike? Yes you can - there are now several companies covering this.
What happens if I break down while on hire? You will be supplied with the necessary tools and equipment to repair a puncture but for anything more serious we have a trailer to come and rescue you.
Electric bikes are safer at lights and roundabouts because they can pull away quicker but take caution as some motorists may not be aware it is electric and think they have time to pull out.
Negotiating tricky terrain can be made easier because you have better balance than a normal bike that would have to be pedalled.
Riding through deep puddles where your feet would get wet on the pedals can be overcome by using the throttle and keeping your legs raised up!
Angry dogs can be avoided by using the same method. When a dog decides he wants you for lunch raise your leg - use the throttle so he cant catch your feet while pedalling. I have personal experience of this method!!!
Ride uphill while standing up getting a better view and ease any saddle soreness
if your balance is not quite right you can use your legs as stabilisers to give you extra stability and confidence
